How to deal with WebRTC?

WebRTC: what is it?

WebRTC is a special tool that enables browsers if installed, establish real-time with websites a user browses. With this is a tool you can exchange message, make video conferences with other people in a real-time mode without installation of any additional app.

The tool is able to exchange data via established channels between your browser and your target websites. However, if you are using an encrypted tunnel, these channels are able to bypass it.

And this is the vulnerable spot. No matter which VPN you are using, any website can get access to our IP address.

And what is worse, this thing cannot be fixed, otherwise, WebRTC simply won’t function normally. The good news is that you can figure out how to block the leak.

The ways to block the data leaks

There are several options. The simplest one is installing VeePN. You can use either a regular version of plugins for Firefox/Chrome. In each case, the software will block unwanted access to your data. At the same time, a reliable connection will go on from an anonymous IP address.

You can also use WebRTC from your browser, but blocking the leaks this way may destruct its functionality.

Disabling WebRTC on Chrome

We should warn you that trying to disable WebRTC on Chrome in the wrong way may disturb the browser performance. It is best to do it with its extension – WebRTC Leak Prevent. Normally, the WebRTC will not be turned off completely. Only its features will be reset.

Disabling WebRTC on Firefox

Firefox has a built-in tool to block WebRTC. If you follow the steps below you will find it easily:
- Type “about: config” in the browser bar and press search. Conform “I accept the risk!”. By pressing the relevant button.
- You will see 3 columns: status, types, and value. You should type Ctrl+F on Windows, Cmd+F on Mac and look for “media.peerconnection.enabled” in your search bar to find the one you need.
- When you find the necessary setting, most likely the type will be – Boolean, and value – true. To change them, you should double click and make sure value has become false, and type – modified.

That is all. Several simple actions to disable WebRTC.

Disabling WebRTC on Safari

Safari has an experimental option of disabling WebRTC this is why it is a bit difficult to find. Follow the tips below and you will not get lost.

  1. Click on Safari. You will see a drop-down menu where you should choose Preferences
  2. Choose Advance, where look for checkbox reading “Show Develop menu in menu bar”.
  3. The new Develop tab will open before you. In the drop-down menu look for WebRTC option. Option “Enable Legacy WebRTC API” should be disabled.

And now, your safari browser is released from WebRTC.

Blocking WebRTC in your browser is definitely a good thing, but sadly, it is not enough. You will need other tools to keep our connection private.
